David Oneil Burkes, 66, of Merkel passed away Monday, January 14, 2019. David was born July, 18, 1952 in Matador, Texas to Nobel and Pauline (Addison) Burkes. He enjoyed bull riding as well as watching bull riding and the Dallas Cowboys. Survivors include his his wife Oleta Brenem of Merkel; Sons Justin Burkes of Cleveland, Texas and Jason Burkes of Soddy Daisey, Tennessee; stepchildren Jennifer Lowery of Abilene and Johnathan Brenem of Trent; 12 grandchildren and two great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Shane and one grandson.
Martina Knight, 50, of Merkel passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019. She was born May13, 1968 in Heidelberg, Germany to Jesus “Jesse” and Gudrun “Gudy” (Linder) Moreno. Martina graduated from Merkel High School in 1986. She married Kelly Knight on September 14, 1991. Martina’s hobbies included watching movies and listening to U2. More than anything she enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Kailynn. She is survived by her husband Kelly Knight of Merkel; son Eric Salsberry of Merkel; granddaughter Kailynn of Merkel; parents Jesus (Jesse) and Gudrun (Gudy) Moreno of Merkel; brother Robert and his wife Tina Moreno of san Leon; nephews Justin Knight and his husband Landon Knight of Denver, Colorado, Jerrad Knight and his wife Lisa and their daughter London of san Angelo, Robert Moreno Jr. and his wife Lorena and their children Christian and Mason of League City; niece Kendra Moreno and husband Rodrigo Covaso and their son Jarvis Covaso; uncles Ramone Moreno and his wife Lisa of Merkel, and Mario Moreno of Abilene; aunts Venita Spellman and her husband Jerry of Benbrook, and Wanda Knight of San Angelo. She was preceded in death by her brother Michael “Mitch” Moreno. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00Pm on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Starbuck Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Starbuck Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Lois Fay Dunlap Pruitt passed away December 19, 2018 with her loving family surrounding her. She was born in Eastland, TX on March 8, 1932. In 1949 Lois married Rayburn Argyle Pruitt and embarked on a long and loving journey of life together for 69 years. Lois and Rayburn spent their early years in Abilene raising their children Patricia and Ray. However it was in the 1970’s when they moved to “the place” in the hills surrounded by Castle Peak and Buzzard Peak south of Merkel. It was there Lois found her peace and joy. She loved the serenity of the mountains, the wildlife and embraced watching her grandchildren play, grow and enjoy the country and the home place she so adored. Lois was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Patricia Carter and husband Rayburn Pruitt. She is survived by her family. This includes her brother Jeff Dunlap and wife Jackie, Abilene, TX; her son Ray Pruitt and wife Cynthia, Powell, TX; Emily Carrington and husband Robert, Rockwall, TX; and son-in-law Larry Carter of Bryan, TX. Five grandchildren: Chris Carter and wife Kathy, April Holt and husband Steven, Jennifer Locke and husband Brad, Emily Warren and husband Jeremy and Lance Pruitt and wife Morgan plus eight great-grandchildren.
JoAnn Lancelot Daniel, 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at a local nursing home. JoAnn was born to Harry B. and Mary Louise (Henson) Lancelot on November 9, 1925 in Osage County Oklahoma. In 1942 she married the love of her life Eldon Moutray Daniel and together they had four children. The couple was married for over 60 years before his death in 2003. By trade JoAnn was a bookkeeper, but her passion was her family. She enjoyed time with them, hearing their stories, and creating memories with them. JoAnn also enjoyed the outdoors, tending to her garden and flowers, knitting, crocheting, and especially playing bridge with her buddies. JoAnn is survived by her children Eugene and wife Rhonda Daniel of Shreveport, LA, Freda and her husband Farris Neill of Merkel, TX, Bobbye and husband William Casner of Houston, TX and Leesa and husband Ken Lawrence of Houston, TX; eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Sarah and her husband Bob Brown of Bryan, TX. Visitation will be held from 1:00-4:00PM on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Starbuck Funeral Home in Merkel. Graveside services will be held at 11:00AM Monday, December 10, 2018 at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Abilene.
